What is a wallet, and where is my money actually kept?

Your wallet is simply your own account on that shared record - your place in the book. It's created on your computer when you set up, and your money sits there, on the blockchain itself, not with us. We never hold it and can't reach into it. When you deposit, money moves into your wallet; when you withdraw, it moves out to wherever you choose. You're the only one with the keys.

Honestly, this is the question most people are quietly wondering - and the answer is more familiar than you'd think. Look at your bank account. You can't hold that money either: it isn't a pile of notes in a vault with your name on it, it's a number in the bank's record book - and everyone trusts the record. Most money has worked this way for decades; banknotes are the rare exception, not the rule. Digital assets exist the same way, with one difference that matters: instead of one bank keeping the book, the record is kept by thousands of computers around the world, all checking each other. Your money is real because that shared record says it's yours - publicly, verifiably, in a book no single company can rewrite. And it has value for the same reason any money does: people agree it's worth something and accept it in exchange. That agreement is also why its value can rise and fall - it's real money, kept in a newer kind of book.

What makes the blockchain record different from a bank's records?

A blockchain is the opposite: the record is public. Anyone - you, us, a journalist, a regulator - can look at any account and any movement of money, at any moment, without asking permission. Nothing can be quietly changed or hidden, because thousands of computers hold the same copy and check each other constantly. The fair trade-off to know: banks come with deposit protection and blockchains don't - openness protects you from hidden behaviour, not from market prices moving.

What is the recovery phrase, and why does it matter so much?

Write it down, keep it offline, and never share it with anyone; anyone with the phrase controls the money.

Isn't a big company holding my money safer than doing it myself?

It's a fair question, and the answer is the opposite of what most people expect. When a company holds everyone's money in one place, that pile becomes a giant target - and there's a long history of platforms that were hacked or collapsed, taking customers' funds with them. Because your money stays in your own wallet, there's no central pile for a hacker to raid, and nothing for us to lose, freeze, or run off with. The trade-off is responsibility: keeping your recovery phrase safe is your job, not a helpdesk's. To be clear, this protects your money from theft - it doesn't protect its value, which still rises and falls with the market.

What is a smart contract, and how does my agent use them?

A smart contract is a small program that lives on the blockchain and runs automatically - like a vending machine for money: put the right thing in, the agreed thing comes out, with no human in the middle. The digital-asset markets your agent uses (run by other companies, not us) are built from these contracts. When your agent puts your money to work, it's interacting with those contracts directly from your wallet. This is powerful - it's what removes the middlemen - but it comes with its own risk: a contract can have a bug or be exploited, which is a separate risk from the market simply rising or falling. The markets we use publish security audits (linked on our Terms and Security pages), and your agent independently checks each market on the blockchain before touching it - but no audit is a guarantee.

What is "providing liquidity", and why does it pay?

Every market needs two sides: people who want to trade, and money that's ready to be traded with. Think of the currency booth at an airport - you can only swap pounds for euros because the booth keeps both in the till. Providing liquidity is being the till. Your money waits in a public pool, and traders swap against it all day, paying a small fee each time - those fees are what your agent collects for you. And the deeper the pool, the better the whole market works: a trader swapping against a deep pool barely moves the price, so they get a fair rate, which attracts more traders, which means more fees for the people providing the money. That's why this pays: your money isn't lent out or bet on anything - it's the working inventory of a busy exchange, and the fees are the market paying rent for it. The honest trade-off: while it works, your money's mix shifts with the market (it ends up holding more of whichever asset is falling) - that's why your agent keeps positions centred and why earnings vary rather than being a fixed rate.

Does self-custody mean I need to be more hands-on?

A little, yes - and it's worth understanding upfront. Because you're in control (not a bank), a few things are your responsibility: keeping your recovery phrase safe, and staying loosely aware of the markets your money is in. Those markets are run by independent projects; it's sensible to follow their official channels (linked from their websites on our Terms and Security pages) for any important updates. Your agent handles the day-to-day automatically, so this isn't a full-time job - but decentralised finance gives you more control in exchange for a bit more awareness. We'd rather you knew that than be surprised.

Who actually makes these coins? Isn't someone just printing them?

It's the right question, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on which coin - they are not all the same kind of thing, and the differences matter to your money. Some are issued by a company, the way a bank issues a balance. Some are issued by a rule in software that no company controls. Some are simply a receipt for something else being held somewhere. Your money will usually touch all three kinds, so the next few answers go through them one at a time. The thing worth carrying with you: "crypto" is a category like "paper" - a banknote and a receipt are both paper, and they are not remotely the same promise.

Where do the digital dollars come from? (USDC)

Accepted Answer

Most of your money sits in USDC, and this one IS issued by a company: Circle. When someone sends Circle real dollars, Circle issues the matching USDC; when someone gives USDC back, Circle destroys it and returns the dollars. So they can't freely print it - each one is meant to exist only because a dollar came in. Circle says the reserve is held mostly in a fund of cash and short-dated US government debt, and publishes a monthly report from a large accounting firm confirming the reserve is at least as big as the USDC in circulation. The part you should actually hold on to: that report is an attestation, not a full audit - a check of the figures on a stated date, not a standing guarantee. Circle is a company, and a company can fail or be frozen. That is a genuinely different risk from the market simply moving, and it is the one you take by holding digital dollars rather than pounds in a bank. It isn't covered by the FSCS.

Question 18

And ETH - who issues that?

Nobody, in the sense you mean. There is no company, no head office and no one who can decide to make more. New ETH is created by a rule in the software itself, paid to the thousands of computers that keep the network running as their wages for doing it, and any change to that rule needs those thousands to agree and adopt it. That's the trade: no issuer who could fail, and equally no issuer to complain to. Its supply isn't fixed - a portion of network fees is destroyed as it's spent, so the total drifts slightly up or down depending on how busy the network is. You mostly meet ETH as the fuel that pays for transactions, and its price moves like any other market.

What about the rewards I see arriving? Where does that money come from?

Worth knowing, because it isn't the same as your trading fees. Your fees are paid by real traders. The figure labelled Rewards is something else: newly issued tokens, created by the marketplace itself (AERO on Base, SHADOW on Sonic) and handed to the people whose money makes that marketplace work. It's the market paying to attract liquidity - a shop handing out vouchers to get people through the door, funded by issuing the vouchers. Two honest consequences. First, it is real money that you can collect and convert, but its value moves with that token's own price, which can fall independently of everything else you hold. Second, and this is why we never quote you a fixed rate: these marketplaces decide weekly which pools get how much, by a vote among their own token holders. Your rewards rate can change from one week to the next without the market itself doing anything at all. That is normal and it is not a fault in your agent.

Question 20

What is a "wrapped" coin - is cbBTC really Bitcoin?

No, and this is worth getting straight. Real Bitcoin lives on the Bitcoin network and can't travel to the networks your agent works on. So a custodian holds the actual Bitcoin and issues a token on the other network representing it - cbBTC is Coinbase's version, and Coinbase holds the Bitcoin. The token tracks the Bitcoin price because it can be exchanged back for the real thing, and Coinbase publishes what it holds against what it has issued. You'll see the same pattern named openly elsewhere: anything starting with a "w" - wrapped Ether, wrapped Solana, wS on Sonic - is a token standing in for something else. The risk you're taking is therefore the custodian's, on top of Bitcoin's own price. If the custodian failed, you would be holding a claim rather than the asset. And redeeming it for real Bitcoin generally means having an account with that company - it isn't a counter that anyone holding the token can walk up to.

Question 21

So which of these is safest to hold?

We won't answer that one, and you should be wary of anyone who does - we're a software subscription, not an adviser, and nothing here is a recommendation to hold any particular asset. What we can do is be clear about what each risk actually is, so it's your judgement and not a guess. A digital dollar depends on a company and its reserves. A protocol token like ETH depends on no company but moves in price. A wrapped token depends on whoever holds the real thing. And all of them, in a liquidity position, are also exposed to the market moving - you can get back less than you put in. If you're weighing up what to hold and how much, that's a conversation for a qualified financial adviser who knows your circumstances.

What does my agent actually do all day?

It watches one number and mostly decides to do nothing about it. Here's the mechanism, because it's the thing you're paying for. Your money only earns fees while the market price sits inside the range your position was opened at. Drift outside that range and the position stops earning. It isn't lost or at risk, it's just idle, like a market stall the crowd has wandered away from. Your agent watches the live price against every position you hold. The moment one drifts out, it starts a timer rather than acting. You can watch that happen: open the Mobile Remote and a drifting position says "Adjusting" with a countdown. Your agent has spotted it and is deliberately holding off. That pause is most of the skill. Reopening a position costs a network fee from your own wallet and locks in wherever the market currently sits, so an agent that reacted to every wobble would quietly cost you more than it earned. How long it waits depends on the strategy you chose (the tighter ones move sooner, the wider ones sit through more of the noise), and those timings are tuned from what actually works rather than fixed by us once and forgotten. If the price is still outside the range when the wait is up, your agent closes the position and reopens it around the new price. That's the tune-up. But if the price wanders back in first, it cancels the whole thing and leaves your money exactly where it is. That happens a lot, and it costs you nothing, which is the point. Tighter strategies earn more per pound while they're in range and drift out more often, which is the trade you're choosing. You pick it, your agent runs it. The honest limit: this keeps your money in the earning zone as the market moves, it doesn't protect the value of the money itself, which can still go down as well as up.

Who controls my money?

You do - always. Your keys are created on your computer and never leave it. We can't touch your money, and neither can anyone else. Important distinction: that protects you from theft by us or by hackers of our servers, but it doesn't protect the VALUE of your money, which moves with markets and can go down as well as up.

Could I lose money? Could I lose everything?

Yes. This is a high-risk activity. The value of digital assets can fall sharply, and you could get back less than you put in - in a severe case, much less. Only ever use money you could afford to lose, and it's sensible to start small until you're comfortable. Your agent works to earn fees steadily, but no strategy removes the underlying market risk.

Are the markets my agent uses safe from "rug pulls"?

It's the right question to ask. Your agent only works with markets that have been vetted - real, established pools with deep liquidity, checked directly on the blockchain before they're ever listed. But it's worth understanding what "deep liquidity" really means. A pool's depth isn't put there by one company - it's the combined money of everyone taking part, and once you deploy, your money becomes part of that shared depth too. You're one of many; so is everyone else. And because it's a shared pool, anyone taking part is free to add or remove their share at any time - which means a market that looks deep today can thin out if others pull back, just as your own money is free to leave whenever you withdraw. Your agent verifies a market is genuine before touching it, and sticks to the grounded end of the market (mainly Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins), but no check can guarantee a market will stay deep or that an asset won't fall in value on its own. This is part of why it's sensible to start small and stay loosely aware of the markets your money is in.

Can I withdraw my money anytime?

How do my positions keep earning - even when no one's watching?

Accepted Answer

Because the earning doesn't happen on your computer - it happens in the market itself. When your agent puts money to work, it places it into a busy shared marketplace where people trade all day long, and every trade that passes through pays a small fee to the people whose money makes that marketplace possible - including you. That's the earning: your money standing in the flow of activity, collecting a tiny slice of it, around the clock. The blockchain never closes, so this doesn't pause when you close the app, look away, or go on holiday - your positions sit there earning by existing. What your computer adds is the tuning: markets drift, and your agent's job is to keep nudging your positions back into the busiest part of the market so they catch as much of that flow as possible. In short - the earning lives on the blockchain and carries on by itself; your agent's job is to keep it earning well. The honest caveat, as ever: fees accumulate steadily, but the value of the money doing the earning still moves with the market and can go down as well as up.

What if my computer is off, crashes, or I lose it?

First, the important part: your money is never stored inside the app - it lives safely in your own wallet on the blockchain, which exists completely independently of your computer. Your funds are never at risk from your machine being off, and nothing can be lost with the machine. What stops is the watching. Your positions stay exactly where they are and carry on earning whatever the market pays them, but nobody is minding the drift - so if the price moves outside a position's range while you're off, it sits there idle instead of being retuned. Reopen the app and your agent catches up within minutes. The hours it was off are simply hours it wasn't doing the job you're paying it for, which is the whole reason to leave it running. On a laptop that means leaving the lid open - or, if you want it closed, keeping it plugged into power with a monitor attached (closing the lid on battery puts any laptop to sleep, and no app can prevent that). If you lose the computer entirely, you restore everything on a new one using your recovery phrase. And you can check on your money from your phone anytime with the Mobile Remote.

Is my deposit protected or insured?

No. Unlike a UK bank account, your money is not covered by the FSCS or any government compensation scheme. Non-custody protects you from us or hackers taking your money, but nothing protects its value from market movements. This is one of the key ways it differs from a savings account.

How do I know this isn't a scam?

Fair question - and the best proof is that you never have to hand us your money to find out. Your funds stay in your own wallet (we never hold them or the keys), so we couldn't run off with them even if we wanted to - and the assets involved are the same Bitcoin and Ethereum that major institutions now hold. There's a free tier, so you can set it up and watch it work for yourself before committing a penny. That said, being non-custodial doesn't make it low-risk - the value of your money still moves with the market.

What does it cost, and how do you make money?

We make our money from that subscription, not from a cut of your earnings: everything your money earns is yours. Your agent lives on your computer and does all the actual work; the phone is a window onto it and a set of buttons that ask it to do things. You reach it by opening app.intent.farm/remote in your phone's browser and signing in with a link we email you, so there's no app to install and no password to remember. Add it to your home screen and it behaves like any other app. What you can do from it: see what you hold and what it's earning, Add money, Put to work, Bring home, check your fuel level, and share your referral link from the Earn button. Question 34

What happens on my phone if my computer is asleep?

Accepted Answer

The phone tells you so - your agent shows as Asleep - and it stops offering the actions it can't honestly complete. Put to work and Bring home go quiet until your computer is awake again, because your agent at home is the only thing that can carry them out. Nothing is queued up behind your back and nothing half-happens. Two things still work. You can look: balances and positions are still there to read. And you can still Add money, because money arriving in your wallet doesn't need your agent's involvement at all - it'll be picked up on the next pass once your computer wakes. Meanwhile your existing positions carry on earning whatever the market pays them, since that happens out in the market rather than on your machine.

Question 35

If my phone can move my money, what happens if I lose it?

Accepted Answer

Your keys are not on your phone, and they never have been - they're on your computer and they don't leave it. The phone can't sign anything or move anything itself; it can only ask your agent to, and your agent decides. Someone holding your unlocked phone can see your balances and ask your agent to do the same three things you can, which is worth knowing - so treat it like a banking app, and sign out if you're worried. What they cannot do is send your money somewhere new. Money can only ever leave to an address you approved at your computer, and approving one takes your vault password. Your phone never even learns those addresses: it holds a reference and the last four characters, enough to recognise which one you mean, never enough to name a destination. When you tap Bring home, the phone passes that reference along, and if your agent doesn't recognise it, it refuses. So the worst case is someone moving your money back to your own wallet.

Can I approve a new withdrawal address from my phone?

Accepted Answer

No, deliberately - and it's the one limit we'd never relax. Approving an address is the single action that widens where your money can go, so it happens only at your computer and only with your vault password. Your phone can send money to a place you already approved; it can't create a new one. That's the whole reason the arrangement is safe. If the phone could add a destination, everything else we do to protect you would rest on whoever is holding it. It can't, so it doesn't. The trade-off is real: if you're away from your computer and want to send money somewhere new, you'll have to wait until you're back at it. We think that's the right way round.

Stay a while, and the hours you unlock run on your own machine. A café doesn't give you free wifi out of charity - it gives you a reason to come in and stay, it costs them almost nothing per person, and it makes the place somewhere you want to be. Localmoney works the same way: instead of bandwidth, the business unlocks hours of earning software. The shop never pays you and never touches your money - it gives access, exactly like handing over a wifi password.

Do I need a subscription if I'm unlocking hours locally?

No - the two are separate ways in. Unlocking hours at a business costs you nothing and runs your agent for those hours only; when they run out, it stops. A subscription is what you take out if you'd rather it ran around the clock instead of visit by visit. Plenty of people start by unlocking hours locally and never subscribe at all, which is fine by us.

Is my money treated any differently through Localmoney?

Accepted Answer

No. It's the same non-custodial arrangement either way: your wallet, your keys, your machine, and the same market risk - you can get back less than you put in. The business unlocking your hours never sees your money, never holds it and has no idea what it does. All that changes is how the software time was paid for.

How is this different from a bank, or from just buying Bitcoin?

Versus a bank: a bank pays you a set interest rate and protects your deposit; INTENT's earnings vary with the market and your money is not protected - higher potential, higher risk. Versus just buying Bitcoin and holding it: your money here actively earns trading fees rather than only rising or falling with the price, and it's spread across strategies you control - but it carries the same underlying market risk as holding the assets directly.

My agent says it's offline, but my computer is on.

Accepted Answer

Your money is untouched - this is about the connection, not your funds. Three things cause it, in order of likelihood. Your machine went to sleep: a closed laptop lid on battery sleeps no matter what any app wants, so plug it in or leave the lid open. A VPN or company network is blocking the connection: switch the VPN off briefly and see if it reconnects. Or your internet dropped and the agent hasn't retried yet. In all three cases your positions carried on earning the whole time - being offline stops the tuning, not the earning. Quit the app fully and reopen it; if it still shows offline after a couple of minutes on a stable connection, email our contact form at intent.farm/support.

Question 43

A position says it's out of range and not earning. Is something broken?

Accepted Answer

Almost certainly not - you're watching your agent do the thing you pay it for. A position earns only while the price sits inside its range, and when the market moves outside it, the position goes quiet. Your money is entirely safe, just idle. Your agent has already noticed and is deliberately waiting a few minutes before acting, because prices often wobble back and reopening a position costs a network fee. On your phone that shows as "Adjusting" with a countdown - that's the wait, not a stall. If the price comes back, your agent cancels and you keep the fee. If it doesn't, it does a tune-up: closing the position and reopening it around the new price, which you'll see narrated step by step in your activity feed. Either way you don't need to do anything. The one thing worth checking: if a position has been out of range for hours with no adjustment, look at whether your agent is showing as online, since a sleeping machine can't tune anything up.

I subscribed, but my agent is still on the free plan.

Accepted Answer

Your payment isn't lost and you won't be charged twice. This happens when the email you paid with doesn't match the email your agent is signed in with - your plan follows your email address, so a different one at checkout creates a separate account rather than upgrading yours. First, quit the app fully and reopen it; an upgrade that simply hadn't been picked up yet will appear. If it's still showing the free plan, check the address on your Stripe receipt against the one in the app. If they differ, email our contact form at intent.farm/support with both and we'll move the subscription onto the right account - don't pay again.

My phone and my computer are showing different totals.

Accepted Answer

Trust the desktop app, and treat the phone as a window rather than the record. The Mobile Remote is a read-only view of what your agent reports, so a gap between them means the phone is looking at a stale or partial picture - never that money has gone anywhere. Pull down to refresh first. If they still disagree after a refresh, the desktop figure is the one to go by, and the blockchain itself is the final word above both: your wallet address on a public viewer shows exactly what you hold, regardless of what any of our screens say. If the two stay apart after a refresh, send us a screenshot of each at our contact form at intent.farm/support and we'll take a look - that's a genuine fault and we want to see it.

Question 46

My phone showed $0.00 or "Asleep" when I first opened it.

Accepted Answer

A zero on first open is a loading state, not a balance - the phone hadn't heard from your agent yet and was honest about having nothing to show rather than inventing a number. It should fill in within a few seconds. If it sits at zero, pull down to refresh, and check that your desktop agent is running, since the phone can only report what your own machine tells it. An agent that's genuinely asleep will say so on the desktop too. Your balance lives on the blockchain and is never affected by what your phone can or can't reach.

Money is sitting in my wallet and hasn't been put to work.

Accepted Answer

The usual cause is fuel. Every action on a blockchain - opening a position, retuning it, withdrawing - costs a small network fee paid in ETH from your own wallet, and if that runs low your agent stops rather than attempting things it can't finish. It's doing the right thing: a failed transaction still costs money. The app shows your fuel level; top it up with a small amount of ETH on the network you're using and your agent will pick up on its next pass. Then turn on "Keep the lights on" in Settings, so you don't have to do this again. With that switched on, your agent converts about a dollar of your own USDC into fuel by itself whenever the tank runs low, and you'll see it happen in the activity feed. It's worth turning on: an agent with no fuel can't retune a position, can't collect what you've earned, and can't bring your money home either - leaving a position costs a network fee like everything else, so an empty tank is the one thing that can leave your money stuck where it is. Two other reasons money waits legitimately: an amount too small to be worth the fee to deploy, and a strategy that isn't part of your plan. Windows warned me about the installer. Should I be worried?

No, and here's how to check rather than take our word for it. Windows SmartScreen warns about any application it hasn't yet seen downloaded many thousands of times, which includes every new app from a small company. Our installer is code-signed, so click "More info" and you should see the publisher listed as BMC SAASY TECH LTD - that's us, and that name is the thing worth verifying. If the publisher shows as unknown, or as any other name, stop: you don't have our installer. Download only from intent.farm and never from a link someone sent you.

macOS says the app "cannot be opened" or is from an unidentified developer.

Accepted Answer

Expected, and here's the honest reason. Apple lets developers register their apps so macOS recognises them on sight, and we haven't completed that registration yet - so your Mac sees an app it can't identify and stops. It's a statement about our paperwork, not about what the app does. Our Windows installer is registered this way and shows BMC SAASY TECH LTD as the publisher; the Mac build isn't there yet, and we'd rather say so than let you wonder. The way through, once: open the app from your Applications folder and let macOS refuse it. Then go to System Settings, choose Privacy and Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to the message about INTENT. Confirm, and it opens. Every launch after that is normal. If you're on an older Mac you may instead be offered Open on a right-click - either path ends up in the same place. What you should not do is switch your Mac's security settings off wholesale, and nobody at INTENT will ever ask you to. If you want to check you have our genuine file before opening it, the download page lists the SHA256 for the DMG. And if the steps above don't clear it, tell us what your Mac says and we'll walk you through it.

Message us at our contact form at intent.farm/support and a person will read it. Say what you saw, what you expected, and roughly when - a screenshot of the app helps more than anything. If it concerns a specific position or transaction, your wallet address lets us look at the public record and see exactly what happened. One thing we will never ask you for, and nobody legitimate ever will: your recovery phrase. Anyone requesting it is trying to steal your money, including if they appear to be us. There is no support situation that requires it, because it would let us take your funds - and the entire point is that we can't.
